Sydney based Notturno, made up of Melissa Farrow on flute, Karina Schmitz on viola and Simon Martyn-Ellis on guitar, aims to recapture the intimacy and warmth of the salon – true chamber music! – through its rediscovery of works by lesser known composers such as Wenzel Matiegka, Anton Diabelli, Ferdinando Carulli, and Antoine Lhoyer, many of whom walked in the circles of better remembered masters of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The combination of flute, viola, and guitar affords the listener with a delightful variation of textures and timbres, each complimenting and contrasting the other in harmonious expression. Notturno takes immense pleasure in describing the musical kaleidoscope of the salon, through anecdotal descriptions of their instruments and the compositions. On copies of instruments of the period and drawing on their historical expertise, Notturno recreates the soundscape of the time, inviting the listener into their joyful repartee and musical conversation.
